Read the support window before you deploy this
Thirteen months. That is the whole caveat and it is the reason Fedora is on virtual machines only here and not on bare metal. A machine that has to be version-upgraded twice a year is a fine development box and a poor foundation for something that has to sit still.
If you deploy Fedora on something long-lived, put the upgrade in a calendar on the day you build it. Nobody has ever regretted that; plenty of people have discovered an unsupported system during an incident.
When it is genuinely the right answer
Development and validation. A current kernel, a current GCC and a current Python are exactly what you want when the point of the machine is to find out whether something builds. Fedora is also the honest preview of Enterprise Linux, so problems found here are problems avoided on AlmaLinux in two years.
Questions people actually ask
Why is Fedora not offered on bare metal?
Because bare metal here is bought to be left alone, and a thirteen-month support window does not fit that. If you specifically want it on hardware, ask — custom ISO and PXE are available on every dedicated machine.
Can I upgrade in place?
Fedora's in-place upgrade works well. Take a snapshot first; it is in the panel on every virtual machine.
What it is genuinely good at
- Current toolchain and kernel, which is what you want when you are building the thing rather than running it.
- The upstream for Enterprise Linux, so testing here tells you what RHEL will look like in a couple of years.
- Excellent container and SELinux tooling, generally ahead of everything else.
Choose a different one if
-
AlmaLinux
The machine is production and you would rather have ten years of support than the newest compiler.
-
Debian
You want a stable base with a large archive and no upgrade due in thirteen months.
That list is here because a page that cannot name a situation where something else is the right answer is an advertisement. Every image on this estate is included in the price of the machine, so there is nothing to sell you here — only the one that fits.
Versions and support dates are checked against upstream when they change. Last revised 30 juillet 2026.
