Three of those four columns say the same thing on every line, and that is the point: egress, requests and retention are where this market makes its margin, and none of them are billed here. Only the rate moves, and it moves downward with volume. Elsewhere is IDrive e2 at a flat $6.00 per TB — the cheapest rate we found that holds at any capacity with no minimum retention. Backblaze and IDrive cap free egress at three times what you store, Wasabi at one times and bills ninety days whatever you do, Storj charges $7 a terabyte to read your own data back.

Two media, one price list, ordered by what it costs rather than what it is made of. NVMe where the latency is the product — databases, mail spools, container images. Capacity drives where the terabytes are — media, archives, backup targets. Every volume holds three copies on separate chassis, resizes upward without downtime and snapshots independently of the machine it is bolted to. Elsewhere is the cheapest published figure in the same class: $5.00 per TB for single-copy spinning slabs that require the seller’s own VPS in one of four locations, and $47.52 per TB for verified SSD volumes.

The three meters we did not install

Storage is rarely expensive. Getting at it is. Every provider we audited bills for at least one of these, and most bill for all three.

Where the real bill usually comes from

A terabyte read a hundred times costs what a terabyte costs.

Cheap-per-terabyte storage that charges to read is not cheap storage; it is a deposit you pay to get back. Serving a media library, restoring a backup or moving a dataset out is exactly when the meters start, which is exactly when a bill should not surprise you. Ours does not run at all — and there is no fee to leave, because a provider that is expensive to walk away from is not one you chose freely.

The platform

Two layers, one endpoint, no proprietary client.

Everything here speaks a protocol you already have a client for. Nothing you write needs our software to read back, and nothing about leaving requires our cooperation — which is the only durable form of a promise not to hold your data hostage.

Object layer
S3 v4 · erasure-coded 8+3 Every object is split into eleven fragments spread over three cabinets; any three can be lost without losing a byte. What you buy is usable capacity, not raw capacity minus overhead.
Block layer
NVMe Gen4 and capacity HDD Volumes attach to any instance in the same region across a dedicated 25 Gbit storage fabric, and outlive the instance they were attached to. Detach, snapshot, reattach elsewhere.
Encryption

Worth saying plainly rather than implying otherwise: these are not S3 clients. They read a bucket through an s3fs or rclone mount, which is transparent to the application but slower than a block volume for anything random. For a media library it is the right answer; for a database it is not.

Is it really the S3 API, or a subset?

Signature v4, multipart upload, presigned URLs, versioning, object lock, lifecycle rules, per-bucket policies and CORS all work, which covers every client we have tested. Two things are not implemented and we would rather say so: S3 Select, and Glacier-style tiering with retrieval delays. Everything here is hot.

What does egress actually cost?

Nothing. Not capped at three times what you store as at Backblaze and IDrive, not capped at one times as at Wasabi, not $7 a terabyte as at Storj. There is also no charge per PUT, GET or LIST. The rate on the price list is the entire bill, which is why a media library is worth putting here.

Can you read my objects?

Under server-side encryption we hold the key, so in principle yes and under a valid local order we could be made to. Supply your own key per bucket and we cannot; encrypt client-side and we hold ciphertext we could not decrypt if we wanted to. For anything sensitive, do the third one — it makes the question moot rather than a matter of trust.

How is a block volume different from the disk on my VPS?

It outlives the instance. Detach it, attach it to a different machine in the same region, resize it upward without rebuilding, snapshot it independently. The disk that ships with an instance is faster still because it is local, but it dies with the instance and cannot be moved.

What happens when a drive fails?

Nothing you will notice. Object storage is erasure-coded eleven ways across three cabinets and rebuilds itself from the survivors; block volumes hold three copies on separate chassis. Background scrubbing finds silent corruption before a read does, and failed drives are replaced within two hours around the clock.

Is there a minimum retention or a minimum spend?

Neither. Wasabi bills ninety days whatever you do, Storj thirty, MEGA will not sell you less than three terabytes. Here a bucket you fill and empty inside an hour costs an hour, and the smallest thing you can buy is one terabyte at $4.79.
