No ticket, no identity documents, no call. The image list is on the configurator itself, one field below the plan, and a virtual machine is live in about fifty-five seconds.
Boot environments are the one that changes daily life. A ZFS boot environment is a snapshot of the entire system you can boot into, so an upgrade that goes wrong is a reboot into the previous system rather than a recovery. On bare metal with IPMI that makes an upgrade genuinely low-risk.
Jails are the other. They predate containers by a decade, they are part of the base system rather than a runtime you install, and there is no daemon running as root to be a problem.
What you give up, plainly
Docker does not run natively. There are approaches, none of them pleasant. If your deployment is containers, this is the wrong system.
Commercial software and vendor drivers are usually Linux-only.
Some language ecosystems have thinner pre-built support and will build from source more often.
A smaller community, so an obscure problem is more often yours to solve.
Where it fits here
Routers, gateways, VPN concentrators and firewalls, where pf and the network stack are the reason. Storage boxes, where ZFS is. Mail and DNS servers, where a system that changes slowly and coherently is worth more than package count. On bare metal it is also a solid jail host if you want isolation without a container runtime.
Questions people actually ask
Can I run Linux binaries?
FreeBSD has a Linux compatibility layer and it works for a fair amount, but it is not a plan for production software. If the thing you need is a Linux binary, run Debian.
Is ZFS available on the Linux images too?
Yes, as a module, and it works well. The difference on FreeBSD is that it is in the base system and boot environments come with it.
What it is genuinely good at
ZFS as a first-class part of the base system rather than a bolted-on module: snapshots, send/receive and boot environments that let you roll back an upgrade.
Jails, which give you most of what containers give you with a much smaller surface and no daemon.
A network stack and a firewall (pf) with a long and deserved reputation for routers, gateways and anything moving packets in anger.
Choose a different one if
