Why run your own hypervisor here specifically

On any virtual machine anywhere, the hypervisor operator can in principle see the guest. That is not a claim about anybody’s conduct, it is how virtualisation works. Running Proxmox on your own dedicated machine removes that party entirely: single-tenant hardware in a locked cabinet, and the hypervisor is yours.

Combine that with a jurisdiction chosen for its law and an account that never learned your name, and the number of parties who could be compelled to do anything about your workload gets very small. That is the actual argument for this page.

The subscription question

Proxmox VE is free and fully functional without a subscription. What a subscription buys is the enterprise repository and vendor support. Without one you use the no-subscription repository, which is the same software on a slightly faster track, and you dismiss a dialogue at login.

Nothing here requires you to buy one and nothing here resells one. If you want vendor support, buy it from Proxmox directly.

Sensible hardware for it

  • Plenty of RAM, because it is what you actually run out of. It is the first thing to specify upward.
  • Two disks minimum for a ZFS mirror; the installer will set it up.
  • IPMI, which is included on every dedicated machine here — a hypervisor you cannot reach out of band is a hypervisor you will eventually pay somebody to visit.
  • A second machine if you want clustering and live migration, which is where this gets genuinely good.

Installing it

Proxmox VE 8 is offered as a first-class image on bare metal. If you would rather run the installer yourself against your own answer file, custom ISO and PXE are available on every dedicated machine.

Questions people actually ask

Can I resell virtual machines from it?

Technically nothing stops you. The acceptable use policy applies to what runs on it, and it applies to your customers' content as much as your own — which is a thing to have thought about before you sell the first one.

Do you manage it?

No. It is your hypervisor, which is the point. An engineer will help with the hardware and the network underneath it.

What it is genuinely good at

  • You become the hypervisor operator. Nobody else has access to the layer your virtual machines run on, which is a genuinely different security position.
  • KVM and LXC in one interface, so heavy isolation and cheap containers live on the same box.
  • ZFS and Ceph support in the installer, and backup that is part of the product rather than an add-on.

Choose a different one if

  • VMware ESXi Your organisation already runs vSphere and the tooling and staff knowledge are the deciding factor.
  • Debian You want containers rather than virtual machines and would rather run Docker or Podman directly on the metal.
